About Orthodontic Appliances

An orthodontist generally uses two types of appliances one is fixed, and other ones are removable. Here is a list of some appliances that you can check out:

  • Dental braces: They include brackets and wires and are fixed around the teeth, they act as anchors of the appliance and brackets are attached to the front of the teeth.
  • Space maintainers: They are also fixed and are generally for the purpose of preventing the teeth from outgrowing if the kid loses any of the milk tooth. A band is used for fixing in this.
  • Special fixed appliances: They are used to prevent the kids from sucking the thumb and to control thrusting of the tongue. The patients will become uncomfortable and will not be able to eat properly. That’s why they are used only in necessary conditions.
  • Aligners: They are a better alternative to traditional braces, and you can take them out anytime you want like when you are eating or brushing. They are unnoticeable and are invisible to the people.
  • Headgear: The growth of the upper jaw is slowed down by the headgear and it helps in keeping the back teeth in perfect position and pull back the front teeth. In this a metal wire is attached to a strap, which is present around the back of your head.
  • Cheek and lip bumpers: They serve the purpose of reducing the pressure on the teeth due to lips or cheeks.
  • Retainers: They are removable and generally placed on the roof of your mouth. This prevents the teeth from getting back to their original position. They can also be used to prevent kids from sucking the thumb.
